The Flamingo Club was founded at the Akron, Ohio summer IJA festival in 1987. The club was a means for the women to get together for cocktails and try to find each other in the sea of men … to get to know each other.
Each year the club holds one or two meetings at the annual IJA summer festival to socialize discuss what we can do to help continue to grow the juggling community. Local juggling festivals hold meetings as well. Childcare is coordinated by the club at some festivals.
The Flamingo Club provides the recognition, support and encouragement of female-identifying and non-binary persons, children, and families, in order to build a more inclusive juggling community.
The award is given to highlight a female-identifying or non-binary person who has shown outstanding support, inspirational skill, or exceptional promotion of juggling. Individuals can, and are encouraged to, nominate themselves.
All are welcome, cis-men are asked to listen more than they speak to ensure room for those who’s voices are less often heard.
